Clinic Profile

In the Internal Medicine Clinic of Nicosia General Hospital, a model Diabetes Centre operates, which includes:

  • Diabetes Clinics
  • Cardiometabolic Clinics (Hypertension/Dyslipidemia/Diabetes)
  • Insulin Pump Clinic

The diabetes clinics are staffed daily by 3 physicians with a special interest in Diabetes Mellitus, as well as by a Diabetes-Specialized Nursing Officer. Approximately 1,700–2,000 evaluations are performed annually (according to statistical data from 2022–2023). The clinics provide comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services for patients with prediabetes or diabetes mellitus and their comorbidities (hypertension/dyslipidemia/obesity).

Services include the management of patients with:

  • Prediabetes (impaired fasting glucose or impaired glucose tolerance)
  • Type 1 Diabetes (treated with insulin therapy)
  • Type 1 Diabetes on insulin pumps (with telemedicine/remote access monitoring of pump data through a specialized database)
  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • Other types of diabetes (e.g. drug-induced, postoperative, etc.)
  • Diabetic foot

The Diabetes-Specialized Nursing Officer provides:

  • Patient education and counseling on diabetes and its management (including relevant educational material).
  • Training for hospitalized and outpatient diabetic patients (self-monitoring of blood glucose, insulin therapy, recognition and management of hypoglycemia symptoms, glucagon administration).
  • Titration of insulin therapy doses or newer injectable antidiabetic agents in collaboration with treating physicians.
  • Preliminary screening evaluation of the diabetic foot (superficial/deep sensory testing, peripheral pulses, ankle-brachial index, trophic skin changes, fungal infections, etc.)

The diabetes centre collaborates with/is composed of a multidisciplinary team for the holistic management of diabetes mellitus and its possible complications, including:

  • Clinical dietitians
  • Ophthalmologists
  • Cardiologists
  • Neurologists
  • Nephrologists
  • Vascular surgeons
  • Plastic surgeons
  • Infectious disease specialists

The Diabetes Centre of Nicosia General Hospital, committed to providing high-level healthcare services, is in the process of certification under ISO 9001:2015 and 15224:2016, and provides training to Internal Medicine residents and Medical School students from the University of Cyprus.
