Clinic Profile

At the Cardiology Clinic of Nicosia General Hospital, our vision and mission are the continuous upgrade and maintenance of a high level of healthcare services for the full spectrum of heart diseases. Our goal is the timely and accurate diagnosis and treatment of cardiac conditions, while simultaneously ensuring the satisfaction of patients and their loved ones. Our daily routine is characterized by the constant effort to acquire new knowledge through educational activities — both as instructors and as trainees — our participation in research programs, and excellent daily medical practice.

In the catheterization department, coronary angiographies for the diagnosis and treatment of coronary artery disease are performed, as well as primary angioplasties for acute myocardial infarction on a 24-hour basis, and complex angioplasties using rotational atherectomy, laser thrombectomy, lithotripsy with Shockwave balloon, intravascular imaging with IVUS/OCT, and physiology assessments using iFR/FFR. A service for chronic total occlusion coronary angioplasty is offered by a specialized team of interventional cardiologists, along with a department for percutaneous repair of structural heart diseases using advanced valvular therapies, such as transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), percutaneous mitral and tricuspid valve repair (TEER), left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO), closure of atrial septal defects or patent foramen ovale (ASD/PFO closure), implantation of Coronary Sinus Reducers, and percutaneous treatment of paravalvular leaks (PVL).

An electrophysiology unit operates, performing device implantations such as simple pacemakers, leadless pacemakers, defibrillators, and biventricular pacemakers. Specialized electrophysiological studies are conducted for common or complex arrhythmias, and lead extraction services are also provided.

The catheterization laboratory of the Cardiology Clinic is also a Center of Excellence and the only authorized training center in Cyprus and Greece for REACT (Resuscitation and Acute Catheter Lab Emergencies) seminars, aimed at training staff (doctors, nurses, and radiographers) in the management of acute and emergency situations in the catheterization lab.

At the Non-Invasive Cardiology Laboratory of Nicosia General Hospital, Transthoracic and Transesophageal Echocardiograms (two- and three-dimensional) are performed daily. Standard treadmill stress tests, Dobutamine Stress Echocardiograms, and exercise stress echocardiograms using an ergometric bicycle are also performed.

The laboratory performs 12-lead electrocardiograms and applies Holter monitoring devices for heart rhythm recording from 24 hours up to one week.

Specialized studies are conducted for patients with cardiomyopathies and valvular diseases. In collaboration with the Hemodynamic Laboratory, assessments are performed for patients considered for percutaneous valve repair and for left atrial appendage closure.

The laboratory is scientifically accredited by the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (a branch of the European Society of Cardiology) for transthoracic echocardiography and stress echocardiography. It is also certified with ISO 9001:2015 and BS EN 15224:2016 quality management standards.

In the Ward, patients with diseases spanning the entire spectrum of cardiology are hospitalized, while the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit treats acute and more severe cases.

In the Outpatient Department, patients with all types of cardiac diseases are monitored, while specialized clinics also operate, such as adult congenital heart disease, heart failure, genetic cardiomyopathies, cardio-oncology, and valvular/structural heart diseases.
