The Spinal Cord Rehabilitation Center (KANOPA) is the only specialized and organized center in Cyprusdedicated to the rehabilitation and treatment of complications in individuals with spinal cord injuries or diseases.
We provide rehabilitation programs for patients with paraplegia or quadriplegia resulting from spinal cord injuries or conditions, as well as for patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome, ICU-acquired neuromyopathy, and bilateral lower limb amputations.
We also offer tertiary medical care for paraplegic or quadriplegic patients who require specialized management due to complications resulting from spinal cord damage. The main areas addressed include:
Our Center, formerly known as the Paraplegics Center, has been operating since 1983 and has been part of the Nicosia General Hospital since 2006.
With a strong focus on continuous education and professional development, several members of our medical and paramedical staff receive training in specialized rehabilitation centers abroad.
This high level of expertise, combined with the compassion of our staff, ensures smooth hospitalization, holistic patient education, and the achievement of the highest possible level of independence. Where full independence is not achievable, caregiver training is provided.
Our physiotherapists, with extensive experience, lay the foundation for achieving the maximum potential of each patient according to the level and severity of the spinal cord injury.
We also offer specialized interventions, such as rehabilitation programs after tendon or nerve transfers, and individualized assessments for the provision of wheelchairs or other mobility equipment based on each patient’s needs.
Our occupational therapist provides training in activities of daily living and personal care, following a personalized occupational therapy program, with the goal of achieving the highest possible degree of autonomy, depending on the level of spinal cord injury.
Specialized interventions for tetrahand (quadriplegic hand) are also provided, as well as the fabrication of thermoplastic upper limb splints for patients with quadriplegia.
The occupational therapy department also includes a specially designed apartment used to train and assess patients (and caregivers, when necessary) in daily living activities — a simulated home environment experience before hospital discharge.

Our multidisciplinary team — consisting of doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, an occupational therapist, social workers, and clinical psychologists — collaborates with the patient and their family to design a personalized, holistic rehabilitation plan, based on the level and severity of the spinal injury as well as the individual’s needs and capabilities.
We maintain close collaboration with other medical specialties at Nicosia General Hospital, including Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Plastic Surgery, Urology, and Neurology, to address any complications that may arise.
Regular team meetings with the patient and their family are held to set goals, plan for discharge, and prepare for potential home modifications to facilitate a smooth return to personal and family life. Vocational rehabilitation is also discussed when possible.
Alongside patient training, caregiver education is emphasized whenever necessary.
Understanding that individuals with spinal cord injuries face lifelong risks of serious complications, our center operates an outpatient clinic for continuous monitoring, prevention, and early management of complications — both for outpatients and through inpatient care when required.
