Clinic Profile

The Thalassaemia Clinic is part of the Thalassaemia Centre and operates under Archbishop Makarios III Hospital. It functions as a day-care unit, operating during both morning and afternoon hours.

About the Clinic

The Nicosia Thalassaemia Clinic is a specialised centre for haemoglobinopathies and it monitors approximately half of Cyprus’s population affected by red blood cell disorders, including:

beta-thalassaemia
alpha-thalassaemia
Sickle cell syndromes
Hereditary spherocytosis
Hereditary elliptocytosis
Other rare anaemias

As well as people with disorders related to iron metabolism.

Objectives and Vision of the clinic

Continuous provision of high-quality healthcare services to all individuals with thalassaemia and haemoglobinopathies, upholding the principle of equal access to care for all patients of the clinic, regardless of social, ethnic, economic, or religious background.
Efficient and fair use of resources, aiming to achieve the best possible outcomes.
Delivery of medical care within a patient-centred model, where the patient is the priority and high-quality service is the primary objective.
Clear and comprehensive patient information as a core principle; ensuring individuals are well-informed about their condition, clinical progress, and available treatment options.

Clinic Services

Evaluation and diagnosis of possible haemoglobinopathies
Treatment and management of individuals with haemoglobinopathies, including modern therapies, according to each patient’s needs and in close cooperation with them

More specifically, the following services are provided:

Blood transfusions and iron chelation therapy
Clinical monitoring
Comprehensive laboratory, imaging, and clinical evaluations
Diagnosis and management of complications related to thalassaemia
Medical examination, diagnosis, and management of a wide range of associated issues, including short-term inpatient care
Management of pregnancy in women with haemoglobinopathies
Management of sickle cell disease-related crises

Counselling for couples at risk of having a child with a haemoglobinopathy
Outpatient services are provided in the morning, while the day-care unit [AM3] operates during both morning and afternoon hours to better accommodate patients.

Education and Staff Engagement

All clinic staff engage in ongoing training through medical conferences and seminars in Cyprus and abroad. They also organise their own educational events to share expertise both internally and with other healthcare professionals, including the presentation of research and clinical experience.

Participation of the Staff to Research Projects

The clinic’s medical staff participate in numerous national and international research programmes, including ITHANET, ENERCA, DEEP, GENE THERAPY, THALAMOSS, HEPATOMICS, HELIOS and more. These initiatives promote continuous learning and foster collaboration and knowledge exchange with global experts in the field.

Training of Students and Health Professionals

Our department provides clinical training to medical students from the European University Cyprus, as well as Biology students from the University of Cyprus and the University of Nicosia.

Training is also provided to healthcare professionals from both Cyprus and abroad on issues related to haemoglobinopathies, through the European Reference Networks (ERN-EuroBloodNet).

In addition, we participate in in-hospital training seminars aimed at informing doctors from other departments.

Overview

The clinic is currently housed temporarily on the 1st floor of Archbishop Makarios III Hospital, which has received Platinum Accreditation by Accreditation Canada.
