Clinic Profile

The Cytogenetics Laboratory is located in the basement of the “Archbishop Makarios III” Hospital and represents a model and modern laboratory in the field of diagnosing chromosomal abnormalities for:

(A) Malignant Hematologic Disorders (Leukemias & Lymphomas)

Our department is a referral laboratory for the entire Cyprus regarding hematologic disorders, as it is the only laboratory in Cyprus that performs this specific analysis. Our department serves the Pediatric Oncology Clinic of the “Archbishop Makarios III” Hospital, all Hematology Clinics, private hematologists, etc. Karyotype analysis in hematologic disorders constitutes a fundamental pillar in all diagnostic and treatment protocols as it is an important tool for prognosis and therapeutic management.

(B) Genetic Analyses in Pre- & Post- Natal Samples

Postnatal cytogenetic analysis of chromosomal abnormalities/rearrangements in peripheral blood with high-resolution techniques by studying the karyotype. This analysis concerns cases:

Postnatal:

  • With recurrent miscarriages
  • With primary infertility
  • With dysmorphic features suggestive of a chromosomal syndrome with unknown etiology
  • With multiple congenital abnormalities
  • Individuals with very short stature
  • With a family history of structural chromosomal abnormalities
  • With disorders of sexual differentiation

Prenatal:

  • Prenatal cytogenetic diagnosis of fetal chromosomal abnormalities in chorionic villi, amniotic fluid by studying the fetal karyotype
  • Cytogenetic analysis of products of conception by studying the karyotype
  • Cytogenetic analysis of fibroblasts following skin biopsy by studying the karyotype

The Laboratory operates according to international standards and is staffed by experienced and specialized scientific and technological personnel. The laboratory has been at the forefront for the past 40 years, contributing to the prenatal and postnatal diagnosis of chromosomal abnormalities, as well as genetic defects in hematological neoplasms. The goal is to provide reliable and prompt genetic diagnostic tests to pathologists, obstetricians-gynecologists, hematologists, endocrinologists, oncologists, pediatricians, and physicians of other specialties. All modern techniques of Cytogenetics are applied, concerning constitutional and acquired chromosomal abnormalities.
