The Transplant Centre at Nicosia G.H. was established in 2011, based on the decision to transfer the relevant service under the auspices of the state. Up to 2011 transplant services were provided by the Paraskavideio Transplant Centre.
The Transplant Centre, which specialises in kidney transplantation, is the only one of its kind, in both the public and private sectors, and the only licensed centre in the country to receive and perform kidney and pancreas transplantation. Evident to its consistently high standards is the renewal of its annual licence, secured through rigorous and highly demanding quality control procedures.
In the 11 years of its operation, the clinic has performed a total of 168 laparoscopic nephrectomies from living donors and 242 kidney transplants, both from living and deceased, with excellent outcomes in terms of their one- and ten-year graft and patient survival rates, results that are comparable only to those of major international centres.
In addition to kidney transplantations, the clinic conducts evaluations of prospective recipients and donors that were referred by local Nephrology Clinics, polycystic kidney nephrectomies, laparoscopic nephrectomies of native kidneys in transplant recipients and kidney donors, and other surgical interventions (such as cholecystectomies and hernia repairs). The clinic also operates two outpatient clinics for monitoring of transplant recipients and a transplantation coordination clinic. For the time being, the clinic can treat up to 8 inpatients in the area of the Nephrology Clinic, until the autonomous Transplant Clinic with a capacity of 8 beds begins its operation.
