The Nephrology Department of the General Hospital of Paphos includes:
There are 3 Nephrologists and 19 Nurses working in the Nephrology Department. One doctor holds the position of Assistant Director of Nephrology and is the Head of the Department. One nurse holds the position of Senior Nursing Officer and is the Head Nurse of the Hemodialysis Unit. Another nurse is responsible for Peritoneal Dialysis and the Outpatient Clinic.
The unit is capable of operating 14 dialysis stations. Currently, it is operating with 13 dialysis stations. The unit functions in 3 shifts daily.
Acute Kidney Failure in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU):
For managing acute kidney failure in the ICU, there are two standard hemodialysis stations and two machines for continuous renal replacement therapy for hemodynamically unstable patients.
The unit continues to face space issues both for patient training and for effectively addressing the problems of patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis. A new ward is urgently needed to serve these patients. Additionally, a dedicated nurse is needed to focus exclusively on peritoneal dialysis and patient education.
Internationally, the Paphos unit serves as a model regarding transplants, as the majority of patients in end-stage renal failure are now transplanted, active, and productive members of their families and society.
The nephrology outpatient clinic operates daily by appointment with the assistance of a nurse. This nurse is also responsible for the inspection and maintenance of fistulas and central venous catheters, assists in the placement of catheters for emergency dialysis, and helps with blood draws and the administration of injections and IV fluids.
Patients with the following conditions are monitored at the clinic, where specialized services are provided for diagnosis and treatment:
Nephrology inpatients are hospitalized in the Internal Medicine ward under the care of the nephrologist. Specialized services are provided regarding diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring, including renal replacement therapies such as standard periodic hemodialysis or continuous hemofiltration. The nephrology clinic covers all emergency nephrology cases from the Emergency Department, all wards, and the ICU 24/7.
The Nephrology Department of Paphos Hospital, in collaboration with the University of Cyprus, continues to participate in the research program on hereditary nephropathies, especially Medullary Cystic Kidney Disease and Familial Microscopic Hematuria.
