Clinic Profile

The Department of Nephrology consists of six sub-departments: 1. the Nephrology Clinic with 16 beds 2. the Haemodialysis Department 3. the Department of Peritoneal Dialysis 4. the Outpatient Nephrology Clinic 5. the Kidney Disease Day Care Department 6. the Plasmapheresis / Haemodialysis Department with 4 beds.

1. The Nephrology Clinic offers investigation and appropriate treatment to patients hospitalised with acute and chronic nephrological conditions. Treatment is also provided to all patients who require dialysis for the short- or long-term management of their nephrological symptoms. Severe acute cases occur for example due to multiple organ failure especially in cases of sepsis or after open heart surgery. Such cases may require an artificial kidney or.

2. The Haemodialysis Department has 49 state-of-the-art dialysis machines and serves 300 chronic patients in need of regular dialysis, three times a week per patient. Each dialysis session may last for four or more hours.

3. The Peritoneal Dialysis Department serves approximately 50 End Stage Renal Disease cases. At the same time, it operates an outpatient clinic for monitoring and evaluating such cases on a monthly basis, while also training the patients or their next-of-kin on applying the specific dialysis method.

4. The Nephrology Outpatient Clinic operates five days a week and serves cases of chronic kidney disease. The patients are initially referred by their general practitioner however long-term referrals are issued by us. Commonly, our patients suffer from multimorbidity such as diabetes, hypertension, idiopathic or secondary glomerulonephritis, inherited kidney diseases, etc.

5. The Kidney Disease Day Care Department operates in the mornings with four beds for patients receiving systemic intravenous medication for diseases such as vasculitis with renal involvement, autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus nephritis, etc.

6. The Plasmapheresis Department operates with 2 beds within the Nephrology Clinic. Inpatients with nephrological, haematological or neurological diseases are treated here, if indications for plasmapheresis and removal of immune complexes exist. The plasmapheresis method is indicated in immune diseases such as thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, Guillain Barre’s syndrome et al. and contributes to the patient’s survival, alleviation of disease symptoms, and renal function retainment. The team of Nephrologists of the department place temporary central venous catheters for immediate haemodialysis in the right medial jugular vein or femoral vein.  When there is an indication for diagnostic or treatment purposes, kidney biopsies can be performed under ultrasound guidance.
