The Pediatric Oncology / Pediatric Hematology Clinic of Archbishop Makarios III Hospital is the only clinic in our country that offers specialized care to children and adolescents up to 18 years of age with hematological and oncological diseases.
More specifically, in our clinic, children and adolescents receive specialized treatment for malignant diseases such as leukemias, lymphomas, brain tumors, sarcomas, neuroblastomas, kidney tumors, bone tumors, germ cell tumors, other rare solid tumors, and histiocytoses. Patients with non-malignant hematological conditions are also monitored and treated, such as leukopenias/neutropenias, anemias (excluding thalassemia), and thrombocytopenias (conditions involving coagulation disorders such as thrombophilia or hemophilia are excluded). In addition, children and adolescents with genetic/hereditary diseases predisposing them to cancer are monitored.
Patient care is provided through the individual departments of the clinic, which include:
– Inpatient Care Department (hospital ward):
Consists of 14 beds with the capacity to expand to 19, and concerns pediatric and adolescent patients hospitalized with malignant and other non-malignant diseases receiving anti-neoplastic and supportive treatments.
– Day Care Unit:
Consists of 8 beds and concerns pediatric and adolescent patients with malignant diseases for therapies that do not require overnight stay, maintenance of central venous catheters, blood tests for adjustment of chemotherapy administered at home, administration of other forms of therapy (immunotherapy, anti-angiogenic therapies, transfusions), and short-term hospitalization.
– Outpatient Department:
At the clinic’s outpatient services, patients with malignant diseases are monitored throughout treatment as well as during the five-year post-therapeutic period, patients receiving targeted therapies within the context of personalized treatment, and patients after bone marrow transplantation. In addition, a specialized long-term follow-up program operates for survivors, focusing on the diagnosis and management of late complications or secondary health problems. Patients with benign tumors or benign hematological conditions (anemias, thrombocytopenias, neutropenias, eosinophilias, etc.) are also monitored. Finally, patients with cancer-predisposition syndromes are also followed.
– Bone Marrow Study Laboratory
Our clinic applies international treatment protocols within the context of participation in multiple scientific societies of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology such as SIOPE (European Society for Paediatric Oncology), SFCE (Société Française Cancers Enfant), CCLG (Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Group), and ESID (European Society of Immunodeficiencies).
A key priority in the management of pediatric oncology patients is the use of the fewest and least toxic treatments possible and the administration of targeted therapies and other immunotherapies.
Our clinic maintains close collaboration with recognized centers of excellence abroad and actively participates in multidisciplinary teams, primarily in Germany and France. The purpose of these teams is to discuss and determine treatment plans for difficult and complex cases, always prioritizing the benefit of our patients, ensuring optimal management and treatment — equivalent to that offered in major international centers. Additionally, in cases where treatment or part of it is not available in Cyprus, children are referred by the Ministry of Health to international centers of excellence.
The clinic’s multidisciplinary team consists of pediatricians–pediatric oncologists–pediatric hematologists, specialized nurses, a clinical psychologist, a social worker, and teachers with experience in hospital education. Within the framework of this multidisciplinary approach, and aiming at holistic support of patients and their families, spiritual support is also offered — if desired — by the Protopresbyter, head of the Holy Church of Saint Dimitrios Akropoleos of the Saint Dimitrios parish.
The operation of our clinic is significantly supported by the Cyprus Association of Cancer Patients and Friends (PASYKAF), particularly with regard to palliative care, as well as by many non-profit organizations dealing with children suffering from cancer, along with numerous other bodies and private individuals.
